Cool Turf Technology

Regular Turf vs Turf Chiller

Is Artificial Grass Too Hot for Barefoot Kids & Pet Paws?

A lot of people make the mistake of comparing an artificial sports field to an artificial lawn which uses products specifically developed for landscaping applications. The significant difference between the two is an infill made from black crumb rubber, which is almost exclusively used for artificial sports turf and rarely found in current artificial lawn installations. Residential & Commercial lawns use sand infill, which is significantly cooler than its rubber counterpart. Elite does not use any rubber infill due to heating and potential health concerns.

Still, even for those who live in extremely hot and sunny climates, there are choices you can make which will reduce the amount of heat retention in your lawn:

Temperature controlled fibers – There are several products which were developed to be particularly resistant to heat. You will usually see these referred to as “cool blades” or "turf cooling technology". Old school artificial turf did not have temperature controlled fibers, thus added to the overall temperature rise.

Lighter colored fibers – Just as with anything else, darker shades absorb more heat, so lighter colored fibers stay noticeably cooler.

For non-pet applications, we also offer a sand infill that lowers surface temperatures by 30 to 50 degrees. More information below.

KEEP THEM COMFORTABLE EVEN ON HOT DAYS

Cool Blades by Imperial Synthetic Turf, SGS Turf, Purchase Green, Smart Turf, Purchase Green, and Easy Turf
The engineered shaped fiber and the polymer additives, helps to reduce the surface temperature of the grass by diverting UV rays from the shorter curled fibers where heat can be trapped. In many cases Cool Yarn grasses are capable of producing temperature improvements of 10-20% relative to grasses with the highest heat retention rate. In additional to polymer additives, the shape of the fiber and construction of the product make it our BEST PERFORMING temperature controlled product we carry - a benefit your pets and children will love.

Engineered blades also combat matting and the blades will stay upright for many more years than flat blades. We here at Elite will always show you the best products for your outdoor living makeover; So we'll be showing you engineered blades. Make sure when you get your other quotes to ask for engineered blades, or else you'll be looking at a flat lawn in a couple of years!

Tiger Cool Turf Tiger Cool by Tiger Turf

TigerCool® created by Tencate, a worldwide innovator of space-age yarns for NASA and Boeing, TigerCool® yarns are engineered with heat reflective color pigments and advanced U.V. inhibitors that reduce surface temperatures. A series of solar panel tests indicate that artificial grass featuring TigerCool® technology successfully reduces turf temperatures by 15% and up to 10 degrees! That’s a difference that you can feel.

Don’t let the heat interfere with your life. TigerCool® makes any outdoor event a cool and pleasant experience. It’s perfect for any front yard, backyard, commercial property, public park, or municipality. Like all of our turf products, it’s safe for children and is pet friendly!

HydroChill
It's no secret that synthetic grass lawns can be hot during summer months. Now, with the development of the HydroChill Turf Chiller® evaporative cooling system, families and pets can enjoy being outside even on the hottest days. Our New synthetic turf cooling system can reduce temperatures by 50°

The newest patented product infill taking the industry by storm, HydroChill® Turf Chiller patented technology has been developed through years of turf system research. This special infill will lower the surface temperature of the artificial grass by 30 to 50 degrees!

HydroChill Turf Chiller® patented technology has been developed through years of turf system research. It has been vetted with laboratory testing and, more importantly, actual outdoor lawn testing.

A standard lawn with a wet surface will cause some cooling, but temperatures can quickly rise and may exceed uncomfortable levels of heat. A HydroChill Turf Chiller® lawn has been shown to create a substantial temperature differential in real-world applications.

Testing methods include thermocouple probes, IR thermometers, and FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) cameras on outdoor surfaces, as well as custom designed indoor solar simulator. And, it is Antibacterial, so it's ideal to deter odor from Pet Urine.

How to keep Artificial Grass Cool
Artificial grass may not get as hot as asphalt, concrete, rocks or sand, but it is also not as cool as natural grass. Fortunately there are a number of ways to keep turf cool on those hot summer days.

1. Find an artificial grass installation company that carries turf and infill that have cooling properties.
2. Avoid using rubber infill as they absorb heat, compared to their sand infill counterparts.
3. Use trees, shade cloths & shade sails, or retractable awnings to keep turf shaded if it gets a good amount of direct sunlight in the afternoon.
4. Quickly hosing down the turf will immediately lower the surface temperature. This is especially useful if it’s over 100 degrees outside and the kids want to go run around barefoot on the turf.
